The Vereda do Larano is one of Madeira’s most spectacular and historically significant walking routes. This ancient coastal path was carved into the northeastern cliffs centuries ago to connect the fishing village of Porto da Cruz with Machico — the island’s first capital. Today it remains one of the most rewarding full-day walks on the island, combining dramatic sea cliff scenery, traditional terraced agriculture, and sweeping views across to Porto Santo.
The Vereda do Larano Route — What to Expect
The trail begins in Porto da Cruz and follows the northeastern coastline, climbing through terraced farmland before reaching the high cliff sections with vertiginous drops to the Atlantic below. The path is well-maintained but involves some steep sections and uneven terrain — sturdy footwear is essential. Total distance is approximately 9 kilometres one way, with around 500 metres of elevation gain and loss throughout.
The return journey is handled by our team, so you walk at your own pace without worrying about retracing your steps. Our guide accompanies the group throughout, sharing the history of the route, pointing out endemic plants in the surrounding laurel forest, and making sure everyone gets to the best viewpoints safely.

Difficulty and Fitness Level
The Vereda do Larano is rated moderate. It is suitable for anyone who is reasonably active and comfortable walking on uneven terrain for several hours. You do not need to be an experienced hiker, but you should be comfortable walking for 4–5 hours with breaks. The path is not suitable for young children or people with significant mobility difficulties due to the cliff sections and uneven surface.
