Rabaçal and the 25 Fountains — Madeira’s Most Famous Levada Walk

The 25 Fountains levada walk in Rabaçal is the most iconic walk on Madeira — and one of the most dramatic in all of Europe. The route follows a narrow levada channel carved into the cliff face of a deep volcanic valley, passing through ancient laurisilva laurel forest before arriving at a spectacular natural amphitheatre where 25 waterfalls cascade down mossy black basalt into a turquoise pool.

The Rabaçal valley sits in the heart of Madeira’s central mountains at around 1,000 metres altitude. The forest here is primeval — genuinely ancient, UNESCO World Heritage listed, and unlike anything in mainland Europe. Tree heather grows to the height of oak trees. Mosses and ferns cover every surface. The light through the forest canopy creates an otherworldly atmosphere that stops even experienced hikers in their tracks.

The Route

  • Distance: Approximately 12 km round trip
  • Duration: Full day, 5–6 hours total with breaks
  • Difficulty: Moderate — some narrow cliff sections, mostly flat along the levada
  • Altitude: Around 1,000m throughout — bring a warm layer
  • Highlight: The 25 Fountains waterfall amphitheatre at the end of the route

Our guide accompanies you throughout, sharing the history of the levada irrigation network, identifying endemic plants, and making sure the group reaches the best viewpoints. Transport from Funchal and back is included.
