Madeira has some of the best canyoning in Europe, with dozens of descents running from gentle family-friendly routes to technical expedition-grade canyons. Whether you’re going canyoning in Madeira for the first time or you’re a seasoned canyoneer looking for your next project, here’s how the best Madeira canyons stack up on the international V1-V5 difficulty scale.
The canyoning difficulty scale, briefly
Whatever your level — V1 to V5 — there is a route for you. Browse all our private canyoning tours in Madeira with certified local guides, full gear, and small groups.
Canyons are graded on two dimensions: vertical commitment (V1-V7) and aquatic commitment (A1-A7). For planning a canyoning tour in Madeira, the V rating matters most. V1 is a gentle descent with small drops and easy swims. V5 involves long abseils (50+ metres), committing terrain and potentially difficult escapes. We stay in the V1-V5 range because that’s where the Madeira canyoning sweet spot is.
V1 – Beginner canyons in Madeira
Lombo Atravessado
A short, playful canyon close to the centre of the island — our go-to when first-timers arrive in the morning with cold feet. Short abseils (max 8 m), a couple of slides, and pools deep enough to jump. Runtime in-canyon: 1.5-2 hours.
Seixal canyon
On the north coast. Dramatic scenery, easy access, a clean mix of 6-12 m abseils. Perfect for families and groups where one or two people are nervous about jumps.
V2-V3 – Intermediate canyons in Madeira
Ribeira das Cales
The most popular intermediate canyon in Madeira and, in our opinion, the best all-rounder. Expect a 25 m abseil into a gorgeous amphitheatre pool, a handful of natural slides, 3-6 m jumps for those who want them, and about 3 hours in the canyon. Suitable for anyone who can swim and handle a first-timer abseil.
Ribeira dos Cedros
Longer and slightly more committing than Cales. Features a series of back-to-back abseils (15-20 m) with good anchors. A nice step up if you’ve already done a V2.
V4-V5 – Advanced canyons in Madeira
Ribeira do Inferno
Madeira’s signature canyon. Long, committing, with abseils up to 40+ m, technical swim-throughs and no easy escape once you commit. Advanced canyoneers only. Our guides run it with groups of two to four with prior experience — not a first-timer canyon.
Ribeira dos Socorridos
A full-day expedition through one of the deepest gorges on the island. Big abseils, long hike-in, and dramatic volcanic architecture. V4 with a V5 variant depending on water.
Which canyon should you pick?
If you’ve never been canyoning before, start with Seixal or Lombo Atravessado. If you’ve done one or two canyons before, Ribeira das Cales is the perfect next step. If you’re an experienced canyoneer, plan a full day on Ribeira do Inferno or Socorridos. Still not sure?
