Why Mountain Biking in Madeira is Unlike Anywhere Else
Most cycling destinations offer flat coastal roads or rolling hills. Madeira is different. The island rises to over 1,800 metres above sea level within just a few kilometres of the coast, meaning every ride involves genuine elevation, real descents, and stunning panoramic views across the Atlantic Ocean.
The terrain is endlessly varied. One hour you’re riding through ancient Laurissilva forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the next you’re on exposed ridgeline with nothing but ocean on either side. Madeira’s trail network covers everything from beginner-friendly forest paths to demanding enduro lines that challenge even experienced riders.
The climate helps too. Madeira sits at 32°N latitude with mild temperatures year-round — typically 18–24°C — making it a genuine 12-month riding destination. No need to wait for summer.
The Best Mountain Biking Trails in Madeira
1. Pico do Arieiro to Encumeada
Starting at 1,818m above sea level, this is Madeira’s high-altitude classic. The trail follows exposed ridgelines with near-vertical drops on either side, passing through cloud and emerging to views stretching across the entire island. It’s challenging, committing, and absolutely unforgettable. Best ridden with a local guide who knows the conditions.
2. Ribeira da Janela Valley Descent
A long, flowing descent from the island’s interior down to the wild north coast. Technical roots and rocks in the upper section give way to faster, open trails as the valley opens out. The finish at the dramatic sea stacks of Ribeira da Janela is a natural reward. Distance: approximately 18km, mostly downhill.
3. Machico to Porto da Cruz Coastal Trail
A gentler option that traces Madeira’s eastern coastline through banana plantations and traditional villages. Great for intermediate riders or those who want scenic over strenuous. The views of the Atlantic and the neighbouring island of Porto Santo make this one of the most photogenic routes on the island.
4. Fanal Forest — Enduro Lines
Fanal is home to Madeira’s most atmospheric riding — ancient, twisted til trees draped in moss, soft forest floor, and a network of trails that wind through one of the island’s most magical landscapes. The enduro lines here are flowy and fast with natural berms carved by years of riding. A favourite with locals.
Mountain Biking Tours with Lokoloko Madeira
Going with a guide makes a real difference on Madeira. The island’s trail network isn’t always well-signposted, conditions change quickly with the weather, and local knowledge — knowing which lines are rideable after rain, which sections to walk, and where the hidden viewpoints are — separates a good day from an epic one.
We offer two main mountain biking experiences:
MTB Group Tours
Our MTB group tours are perfect for riders who want to experience Madeira’s best trails with like-minded people. Small groups of 4–8 riders, led by experienced local guides. We match routes to the group’s ability — we’re not going to take beginners down a technical enduro descent. All bikes, helmets and protective gear are included. Trail difficulty is discussed and agreed before the ride.
Enduro MTB Tours
For riders who want something more demanding, our enduro tours tackle Madeira’s most technical terrain. These are for riders who are comfortable on steep, loose ground, can handle exposure, and want to push themselves. We use gravity-assisted shuttles where needed to maximise trail time. Expect 1,000–2,000m of descending per day.
Both tours include: bike hire, helmet and protection, local guide, transport to trail head, and water throughout the ride.
What Level of Mountain Biker Do You Need to Be?
We cater for all levels, but we’re honest about what each trail demands. Here’s a rough guide:
- Beginner: Comfortable riding on gravel paths and gentle slopes. No prior off-road experience required. We’ll choose accessible routes with rewarding views and manageable terrain.
- Intermediate: Can handle loose surfaces, simple roots and rocks, and moderate climbs. Ready for proper singletrack and some technical features.
- Advanced / Enduro: Experienced off-road rider comfortable with steep, technical descents, exposure, and variable conditions. Our enduro tours are built for you.

When to Go Mountain Biking in Madeira
The honest answer: any time of year works. Madeira’s climate is stable enough for year-round riding. That said, here’s what to expect by season:
- Spring (March–May): Wildflowers in bloom, waterfalls at their fullest, temperatures ideal. Excellent visibility on clear days.
- Summer (June–August): Warm and dry on the south coast. Some north-coast trails can be misty. Great for early morning rides before the heat builds.
- Autumn (September–November): Our favourite season. Fewer tourists, stable weather, trails in excellent condition. The island turns golden.
- Winter (December–February): Mild at sea level, potentially snow on the highest peaks. The forest trails are green, mossy and atmospheric. One of the best times to ride Fanal.
Mountain Biking Madeira — Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to bring my own mountain bike to Madeira?
No — we provide fully maintained trail bikes and enduro bikes suited to Madeira’s terrain. Bike rental is included in our MTB tour packages. If you’re travelling with your own bike, we can of course accommodate that too. Just let us know the geometry and we’ll adjust any group logistics accordingly.
Is mountain biking in Madeira suitable for beginners?
Yes — our beginner and intermediate MTB tours are designed for riders who are comfortable on a bike but have limited trail experience. Madeira has a range of terrain from smooth forest tracks to technical enduro descents, so we match the trail to your level. Complete non-cyclists are better suited to one of our other activities, but recreational cyclists with basic bike confidence are very welcome.
How fit do I need to be for mountain biking in Madeira?
Most of our MTB tours are predominantly downhill — the climbs are handled by vehicle transfer to the top, so you’re riding down rather than grinding up. A moderate level of fitness is fine. For our enduro tours, stronger legs and better bike handling are needed as those involve more technical riding and some climbing sections.
What is the best mountain bike trail in Madeira for beginners?
The Machico to Porto da Cruz coastal trail is our most popular route for riders new to Madeira trail riding — it’s visually stunning, technically manageable, and provides a genuine sense of adventure without being overwhelming. For more experienced riders seeking a challenge, the Fanal Forest enduro lines are exceptional.
Can I mountain bike in Madeira in winter?
Absolutely. Madeira’s mild subtropical climate means mountain biking is possible year-round. Winter is actually one of the best times to ride — the island is green, trails are quieter, and the Fanal laurel forest is at its most atmospheric with low cloud and moss-covered trees. The only exception is the very highest trails during rare snow events, which we monitor and adapt for.
