This tour takes you along Madeira’s southern coastline from Funchal, passing black-sand beaches, fishing villages, and lava rock formations before arriving at the base of the cliff. Suitable for beginners — the southern coast is sheltered and conditions are generally calm.
Sea Cave Kayak Adventure
Madeira’s coastline is riddled with sea caves — some large enough to paddle through, others that require ducking under low ceilings with the swell lifting the kayak beneath you. For most of our tours, no — we cater for complete beginners. Here’s the honest breakdown:
- Beginner tours: No experience needed. We give a full paddling briefing before launch and our guides are with you throughout. The southern coast tours are calm enough for first-timers.
- Intermediate tours: Comfortable on the water, can handle some chop and swell. Sea cave tours fall into this category on most days.
- Advanced tours: Experience in sea conditions, comfortable with swell and exposure. North coast tours require this level.

Best Time to Go Sea Kayaking in Madeira
The southern coast is kayakable year-round thanks to its sheltered aspect and Madeira’s mild Atlantic climate. Summer brings the calmest conditions and warmest water (around 23°C). Spring and autumn are excellent for wildlife — dolphin and turtle sightings peak in these seasons. Winter tours on the south coast are still very manageable; only the north coast becomes unreliable from November through February.

Do I need kayaking experience to join a tour in Madeira?
No experience is needed for our beginner and guided coastal tours. We use stable sit-on-top kayaks that are easy to paddle, and a full briefing and technique session takes place before you launch. If you can swim, you can kayak. More advanced tours and the north coast wild kayak are better suited to those with some prior paddling experience.
Can children go kayaking in Madeira?
Yes — children aged 8 and above are welcome on most of our kayak tours, provided they are comfortable in water. Younger children can sometimes join on calm-water sessions with a parent in a tandem kayak. Our guides assess conditions and group ability on the day and adapt accordingly.
Is kayaking combined with snorkelling in Madeira?
Yes — our most popular ocean tour combines kayaking and snorkelling. You paddle to locations inaccessible from shore — sea caves, rock arches, hidden coves — and then snorkel in the sheltered, crystal-clear water at each stop. Snorkel gear is included. When is the best time for kayaking in Madeira?
Kayaking runs year-round on Madeira’s southern coast. Summer (June–September) offers the calmest Atlantic swells and warmest water. Spring and autumn are also excellent, with fewer people and good conditions. The north coast wild kayak route is best tackled in the calmer summer months when the northern swell is more manageable.
