Peak season: October to May

This is when water flow is strongest, the canyons are at their most spectacular, and you can run almost every route on the island. Air temperatures sit between 15-22 °C, water temperatures around 12-16 °C (wetsuit mandatory, no exceptions). This is the window serious canyoneers plan around.
Shoulder: June and September
Great compromise months. Warmer air (up to 25 °C), still plenty of water in perennial canyons like Ribeira das Cales. Popular with families combining canyoning with the rest of a Madeira holiday. Book 1-2 weeks ahead.
High summer: July and August
Not the classic canyoning Madeira season, but very doable. We switch to canyons with reliable base flow from springs rather than ones that depend on recent rain. The jumps and slides are the same; there’s just less whitewater drama in the main abseil sections. Expect air temperatures of 24-28 °C and warm, sunny days.
Weekly planning
Madeira has its own microclimates. The north coast (Seixal, São Vicente) is wetter; the south (Funchal, Câmara de Lobos) sunnier. If the forecast is bad on the north coast on your tour day, we move to a canyon in the centre or south — just one reason private canyoning tours work well here.
What about after heavy rain?
After prolonged heavy rain we either switch canyons (to smaller catchments that clear faster) or postpone by 24-48 hours. Safety is non-negotiable. If we cancel, you don’t pay.
