Madeira’s volcanic rock faces are among the best natural climbing venues in the Atlantic islands — and our guided beginner and family climbing sessions are the perfect introduction to the sport. No experience whatsoever is needed: our certified instructors teach you the basics of movement on rock, rope technique, and safe communication before you ever leave the ground. Within a few hours, most first-timers are climbing routes they didn’t think were possible when they arrived.

Climbing in Madeira takes place on sheltered sea-cliff crags and inland volcanic outcrops, with routes graded from absolute beginner to intermediate. The rock is generally solid basalt, the views are spectacular, and the natural setting — often surrounded by laurel forest or above the Atlantic — makes it one of the more memorable places to try climbing anywhere in Europe. Suitable for ages 8 and above, and adaptable for all fitness levels.
