Thanks to the nearby Gulf Stream, the volcanic Island of Madeira has a tropical ‘touch’, so is no surprise that nature is the ‘star’ here. The all year-round, green laurel forests form a perfect and amazing show. The fresh spring water gushes from countless cascades, which collects in the levadas (water channels) to irrigate the island of Madeira, as it has been for 600 years now!

Gigantic waterfalls plunge into the depths. The water siphons invite you to take a refreshing forest bath. A particularly magical place is “Fanal“, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and should be on every “walking to do list”.

In absolute contrast to this are the old paths that fishermen used and hiking trails in the coastal area. Whether on the south or north side of Madeira, we mostly follow the watercourses that still irrigate the terraced fields and private gardens today, just as they did 600 years ago. Sugar cane, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, bananas, papaya, mangos, vines, but also very unusual crops, such as Pimpinela or Anona, grow all year round and you should most definitely try them at least once!

Madeira’s rugged mountain landscape in the northeast of the Island awakens “the adrenaline of heights”. The highest mountains: “Pico Ruivo”, “Pico das Torres” and “Pico Arieiro” are icons and will amaze you with their majestic aura, especially at sunrise. An unforgettable experience that will stay with you forever!
